Early Childhood
Public libraries, as institutions of lifelong learning, can make a difference in the lives of children through collections for infants and preschoolers.
Early learning and early childhood education are areas of focus for many public libraries and youth services librarians in your collection development efforts. The ages of birth to four years are considered the most critical learning period in a human being’s life, and public libraries play an important role as early learning resource centers.

All of the early childhood materials from BWI follow the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s Recommendations for Effective Early Childhood Education. We provide materials that are developmentally appropriate and that:

- Offer dual language/bilingual support for the needs of English Language Learners.
- Include high-quality oral language and literature-rich materials.
Books
A child’s early experiences with language contribute to healthy brain development and lay the foundation for learning to read when a child enters school. We offer a wide range of board books, big books, picture books, read alongs and more.
Interactives/Manipulatives
Enhance young readers’ learning with interactive /manipulative materials that extend their reading experience. Young children are hungry for stimulation, and these materials allow them to see, touch, taste and sniff while they learn.
